| Its Just a little pain... By Dr. Brad Fazekas 05-01-2008 "It's just a little pain; I'm normal and I'll be fine” Hello! Pain is not normal. The only thing about pain is that it is common. Pain is your body screaming for help. We have to listen to this warning. So often we live with things, such as: headaches, migraines, allergies, depression, neck pain, carpel tunnel syndrome, low back pain, sciatica, knee and foot problems. These manifestations of pain are not normal and are easily treated with chiropractic care.
When we're in pain or when we become aware of pain, it's like the smoke detector going off in the house. It will tell you two things: one, there is smoke somewhere; or two, there is fire - but it doesn't tell you where. These warning signs may be the only things telling us that something is wrong. As a chiropractor, I stress the importance of locating the smoke and finding the fire. As horrible as your pain and symptoms are, this is telling you that something needs healing attention.
I'd like to back up for a moment and talk about what controls the body. If you ask a doctor, a neurologist, orthopedist or physical therapist, what controls the body, they will tell you it's the nervous system. Today we hear a lot about the nervous system, but what exactly is the nervous system? Well let's look at the "gold standard" for human anatomy. In Grey's Anatomy, the book and not the TV show, page 4, 29th edition, it states, "The nervous system controls and coordinates all systems of the body and it relates the individual to it's environment internally and externally. The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and thirty one pairs of spinal nerves". If there is an interruption in this highway going down from the brain through the spinal cord and exiting through the spinal nerves, you are going to have a problem. Unfortunately, over 90% of your brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves have no pain fibers. This is why so many things in life have no pain or symptoms until sometimes it's too late. For example, breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian and cervical cancer or even hypertension, all have no pain or symptoms. According to the American Heart Association, over 70% of the first symptoms of heart disease is "sudden cardiac death". So, the people who have heart attacks are not the norm, but the exception.
I educate my patients that being pain free doesn’t equate with health. You can have something serious and not even know it. I do not stress fear in my practice, but knowledge. I believe the more you know about your body, the more choices you have. It is important to make decisions based in knowledge, rather than the lack of knowledge. It's the old adage that "knowledge is power"; freedom comes from the awareness that you have choices regarding your health. So when it comes to our health, the more we know about our bodies and how they function, the better we can handle the stresses put upon them.
So how does this relate to chiropractic? What happens because of stress, physical and emotional trauma, that create a misalignment of the vertebrae, which then impinge upon the exiting nerves from the spinal cord? These nerve compressions, subluxations, directly affect the organs and tissues that are supplied by these nerves. Every organ, muscle and function in your body is controlled by these nerves. Let's say that in the upper back, the thoracic spine, you have a misalignment of your first thoracic "T1" vertebra. This nerve goes to the lungs, the hands, the wrist, the fingers and other tissues. Some of the symptoms a patient may experience because of misalignments of this vertebra may be asthma, difficulty breathing, pain in the lower arms and hands. There are multiple examples of similar misalignments and symptoms throughout the spine and the affected organs. I see many people who suffer headaches, migraines, allergies, visual problems, hearing problems, ringing in the ears, depression, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), neck pain, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, asthma, digestive disorders, sciatica, low back, menstrual pain, low back pain, heel spurs and the list goes on.
Spinal misalignments limit your body's ability to function at its highest capacity. In over 90% of cases these problems are asymptomatic. Chiropractors are able to move the bones back in place, thus alleviating destructive pressure from your nervous system. So, if you are having pain or symptoms, please remember that it is not normal but common. It's your body screaming for help. As difficult as it may be, please do something about it.
You can take back your health today. Please call me and I look forward to the opportunity to help you obtain optimal health.
Dr. Bradley T. Fazekas, D.C.
Chiropractor
Early in his childhood, Brad Fazekas began a lifetime of chiropractic care that would accompany him through the many phases of his life. While growing up in Los Angeles, he spent every Friday afternoon at the chiropractor’s office with his mother. It was a tradition he looked forward to, as there were always other children playing in the lobby.
In his early teens, Brad began training as a dancer, eventually moving to New York City to further his studies. He watched as other dancers injured themselves time and time again, while he remained healthy and strong. Brad attributes this to the outstanding preventive qualities of chiropractic care. In 1985, Brad was in a serious car accident during which he was thrown though the car window. This accident threatened to end his dance career. Instead, Brad used chiropractic care along with acupuncture to heal fully and return to dance. From the healed to the healer, Chiropractic became the vehicle to fulfill Brad’s new dream to become a healer. What a gift to support others in their healing process! To this day and with humility and humor, he tries to manifest his core mission: Healing the planet one spine at a time.
During the month of May, Dr. Fazekas will be offering a 30% discount to all new patients.
