ITS COLD AND FLU SEASON AGAIN!
It’s cold and flu season again. How can we protect ourselves and our loved ones from getting sick? And, if we do get sick, what are some things we can do? The practitioners at Centre for Life are have the following suggestions.
Preventing colds and flu by Margaret Olmsted, L.Ac.
• Keep a Positive Attitude: Remember that your body is healthy and vibrant. You can stay in tip top health even when those around you are sick!!!
• Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Drink lots of water, eat healthy foods (especially vegetables) and exercise regularly. Avoid stress and get plenty of rest and sleep.
• Wash your hands a lot. This is the very best thing you can do. If you can’t always gets to a sink, then the use of hand sanitizers can also work.
• Don’t cough and sneeze into your hands. Use a tissue and throw it away immediately. Sneeze into your elbow, or into the air away from people.
• Clean your “shared spaces: phones, keyboards, steering wheels, door knobs, office and household equipment.
• Avoid touching your face as cold and flu viruses enter through the nose, mouth and eyes.
• Wash children’s toys and consider giving young children a bath as soon as they get home from preschool or kindergarten.
• Take your supplements. We don’t always eat as well as we should, so take your vitamins, and consider herbs for boosting the immune system, such as Astragalus.
• Use a Neti pot. If you start to feel in your sinuses that you might be getting a cold, flush them with warm saltwater.
The Homeopathic Perspective by Avghi Constantinides
While many doctors recommend getting flu shots, there are three important reasons to avoid this action:
1. The flu shot contains formaldehyde, gelatin and traces of chicken cells.
2. The flu shot contains viral contaminants that have been linked to cancer.
3. You can get the flu shot - and all the risks that go with it - and still get the flu!
From the OsteoMed newsletter
Homeopaths have proven treatments for people with the flu. There have been at least three large-scale double-blind, placebo-controlled trials using "Oscillococcinum" to treat people with the flu or with influenza-like syndrome. The trick to getting the best results with Oscillococcinum is to use it within 48 hours of onset of the flu. You can also take this if you have been around people who have the flu.
If you do get the flu then the remedy changes, feel free to call Avghi Constantinides and she would be happy to spend 10 minutes with you on the phone at no charge (310-297-5010). There are 397 homeopathic remedies to treat the flu.
Look at your Mental Health by Melanie Erceg, Ph.D.
What is the root cause of sickness if our minds have the most direct effect over the body? Mental confusion. When our minds are stressed, we, in turn, lower our immune responses. The mental worry and debris exits as mucous from the head region. A cold can be viewed as a clearing of sorts. One of the most impactful, preventative methods is to calm the mind when we feel stressed. Thinking and worrying about work is not actually working; it is an unuseful form of energy which ultimately results in a malady. Better is practicing techniques to manage the mind. In this way we are in charge of the effect - our bodies. If you are unfamiliar with techniques, try a counseling session/free consultation with me to learn how.)
What If you do get sick? Here are some favorite remedies:
Over-the-counter drugstore remedies may relieve symptoms but they can suppress what needs to be released and extend your symptoms. They may also have unwanted side effects. Here are some other options:
• Take more Vitamin C. The body absorbs approximately 500mg at a time and can absorb much more when under the weather.
• Eat homemade chicken soup – it will make you sweat out the virus, reduces inflammation and relieves congestion. And it’s comforting (see below).
• Consider Chinese herbs. Bethany Muhl, acupuncturist and herbologist, can tell you the best herbs for you to take depending on the stage of the cold, cough or flu.
• Take Oscillococcinum (see above).
• Take Echinacea Goldenseal, in liquid concentrate or tablet.
• Get lots of rest. Do you only rest when you are sick? Your body is telling you something. Listen to it.
• Drink lots of fluids. Hot teas will help you sweat it out. Stay warm.
• Gargle with warm salty water.
• Soothe your throat with hot water with honey and lemon. Or try Slippery Elm tea. “Throat Coat” from Traditional Medicinals is tasty and works well. Throat lozenges with zinc may also be effective.
• Use a humidifier or vaporizer to moisten the air, but clean it regularly.
• Nose drops can irritate the nose and increase congestion resulting in dependency. Saline sprays are better and may be more effective.
Easy Chicken Soup
Start with a quart of organic chicken broth, add 2 chicken breasts. Bring to a boil and cook until the chicken is done. Remove the chicken and shred. Add chopped onion, garlic, celery and carrots to the broth and cook until veggies are done. Add the shredded chicken. You can make as much or as little as you want. We at Centre for Life wish you a healthy fall season and invite you to call us if you need advice. Remember, the best cure is prevention. Take good care of yourself and relax and enjoy your life.
